The Mother Church of a Thriving Territory

A Century of Faith

Christianity stepped into the soil of Okrika Island in 1878, and the ripples of this great move of God soon reached the satellite communities. St. Anne's Anglican Church in Okujagu-Ama was founded in the mid-1900s, with historical records tracking its formal organization and foundation back to the period of 1907 to 1908.

As the population grew, a second chapel was conceived to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers. The church has consistently been a pillar of spiritual strength, nurturing many other stations and contributing significantly to the expansion of the Anglican Communion in the region.

A Missionary Powerhouse

The growth of Christianity in St. Anne's led to the planting of several daughter churches, most notably St. James' Anglican Church in Ojimba-Ama and St. Thomas' in Azuabie. St. Anne's functioned as a guiding parent, providing leadership and spiritual oversight to these nascent congregations.

In recognition of its vital role and consistent growth, Okujagu-Ama was elevated to a **Missionary Deanery in 2022**, with St. Anne's serving as its prestigious headquarters. Today, it continues to lead under the guidance of dedicated workers and clergy members like Rev. Canon James B. A. Atubo.
