A New Covenant
History of St. Mark's Church
Born from a Crusade of Deliverance
St. Mark's Anglican Church on Ogan mainland was planted in 2002 by St. Agnes Anglican Church, Ogan Ama, during the tenure of Revd. Gordon P. George as Vicar. Its origin traces back to a crusade at the annual Covenant Week held by Ogan Ama Community in July 2001, commemorating God's deliverance during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). The crusade saw many conversions, notably including non-indigenes residing on the Ogan mainland.
To nurture the spiritual growth of these new converts, many of whom were non-Okrika speaking, the St. Agnes Parish Church Council (PCC) resolved to establish a new English-speaking church on the mainland, initially named the New Covenant Church. The first service was held on 5th May, 2002, inside the old site of Excel Secondary School, generously donated by dedicated parishioner Elder Joseph B. J. Ogan.
The pioneer worshippers included the late Revd. Gordon P. George, lay readers Madam Joyce Edward Ogan, Mrs. Ziporah Nitonye, Mr. Meshack J. J. Ogan, Tams Felix-Ogan, and Mrs. Elizabeth Gordon P. George, alongside youths and non-indigenes like Abidakun Abdulkadir, a converted Muslim. Vibrant door-to-door evangelism by the youths rapidly boosted the church's strength.
On 29th April, 2003, the church was re-christened St. Mark's (Anglican) Church by Ven. Tubokosemie R. Abere JP (then Archdeacon of Okrika West Archdeaconry), taking his text from 2 Timothy 4:11.
Development
The Permanent Site
A parcel of land for a permanent site was secured through the collective effort of the community women, led by President Mrs. Faustina H. L. Ogan and Secretary Mrs. Rebecca Ebenezer. Despite some initial opposition, the women resolved to hand over the land, which they had acquired for a small token, for the building of the church.
The foundation stone laying was performed by the premier Bishop, Rt. Revd. Tubokosemie R. Abere JP, on 18th January, 2007. A comprehensive redesign and reconstruction took place in 2018–2020 by Beetho Consult, adding a modern three-floor tower, a new belfry, and extensive renovations. This massive project was initiated and sponsored by the family of Sir and Dame (Dr.) Charles D. S. Ogan in thanksgiving for God's blessings.
The church had long yearned for a resident pastor. In December 2022, under the leadership of Evang. Miebaka Alwell Fibika, the parsonage project commenced by faith. The foundation was laid on 22nd January, 2022 by Bishop Enoch Atuboyedia JP, who also generously provided all the cement for the decking. By August 2024, the ground floor reached finishing stage and was temporarily dedicated.
