History of St. Simon's Anglican Church, Kalaowi Polo

Brought Closer to Those for Whom Distance Was a Barrier

"Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." Mark 16:15 — Theme of the First Open Air Preaching

The history of St. Simon's Anglican Church traces to the period when Ven. Dr. B. A. Obuoforibo was Vicar of St. Martin's Anglican Church, Ogu and Archdeacon of Okrika South Archdeaconry. His vision was to plant another Anglican Church in Ogu, as elderly members found it difficult to attend services owing to the long distance from their homes in Kalaowi Polo.

On 20th April, 2007, Ven. Obuoforibo went into the community with members of St. Martin's Church and announced upon return that Kalaowi Polo was a suitable site for the new station. On Sunday, 27th April, 2007, he processed with the entire congregation of St. Martin's Church to Kalaowi Polo Square for open-air preaching. The word was read by Evang. (Mrs.) Dorathy Nemieboka, and the address was given by curate Rev. Asime I. Nehemiah. Prayers were said to bless the people and the land, and the benediction was taken by the Venerable. Evang. Dorathy Nemieboka was then announced as the Church Teacher for the new station — a duty she performed creditably.

On 4th May, 2007, Chief Emmanuel Ibiorika Kalaowi donated his house — the Kalaowi Assembly Hall — as a temporary worship centre. The church swung into action and grew from strength to strength.

The maiden harvest was celebrated on 16th September, 2007, realising ₦61,090.00. The five-member harvest committee chaired by Mr. Obaka J. Atemie later became the premier working committee of the church, later expanded to seven with the inclusion of Madam Marian James Akien and Priscilla Anga.

The First Holy Communion

Celebrated by Ven. B. A. Obuoforibo in the Kalaowi Assembly Hall

The first Holy Communion and thanksgiving service was a moment of great joy — still held in the temporary worship centre. A total of 19 persons took part in the Eucharist:

The 19 First Communicants

From Assembly Hall to Permanent Edifice

When the Kalaowi War Canoe House members sought to reclaim their Assembly Hall, God miraculously inspired the house chief to donate his personal land to the church for a permanent structure. Ven. Obuoforibo appealed to parishioners for building materials — boats of sand, bags of cement — and many donated their labour to mould blocks. Members paid levies to complement the donations.

On 27th May, 2008, the foundation laying ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Ven. E. C. Ilogu, Okrika South Archdeaconry. The only lesson was from Ezra 3:7–13, read by Sir I. D. Iruoapu-Iweriso. The building rose to roofing level quickly enough to host the second harvest under canopy in the unroofed permanent building.

Evang. Dorathy Nemieboka started the station on 27th April, 2007 and bowed out on 1st September, 2013 after a meritorious service of six years — the present edifice of St. Simon was built during her time. Mrs. Charity Ereburu donated the first set of vestments for the church's take-off.

The land for the parsonage was donated by Mr. Obaka J. Atemie. The foundation was dug on Easter Monday, 21st April, 2014, with the turning of sod performed by Ven. G. T. Orabere, Archdeacon of Okrika South, during the vicarship of Rev. Otonye D. Bulopakaye. On 30th June, 2024, the foundation laying ceremony of the parsonage was performed by Rt. Revd. Tubokosemie R. Abere JP, the Premier Bishop, with 61 persons in attendance.
