A Missionary Drive

Planted by St. Anne's Okujagu-Ama

The Anglican Church at Okujagu-Ama had thoughts of extending the Anglican Church into Azuabie as far back as 1980 when Rev. (now Venerable) B. A. Obuoforibo was the Leader of the Abuloma District group of Churches. Feasibility studies were done in 1982 and 1983 when he visited Mr. Christian Abi, who introduced him to other Anglicans resident in Azuabie.

Rev. Obuoforibo proceeded on transfer in early 1984, halting the missionary drive temporarily. However, he returned as the first Parish Priest in 1986. Under his leadership, the Parish Church Council (PCC) of St. Anne's Anglican Church, Okujagu-Ama completed the necessary protocols and established an Anglican Church at Azuabie on April 20, 1986.

Parish to Archdeaconry

St. Thomas Church grew rapidly in spiritual numbers and financial capability, resolving in a Parochial Church Committee meeting to become autonomous. An application for an autonomous Parish status was forwarded and favorably granted by the Diocesan Synod on April 30, 2002. With effect from January 1, 2003, it operated as an autonomous Parish. History was made on July 31, 2004 when the church was inaugurated as a full-fledged Parish under Okrika North Archdeaconry.

The year 2005 marked a great milestone. Bishop Rt. Revd. T.R. Abere (JP) directed the establishment of more churches in the community for evangelism. Following this, St. Thomas Church became a mother church by planting two churches: the Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit (Amoni Polo) and Immanuel Anglican Church (Ikobirima Polo).

Given this immense growth and its role as a mother church, St. Thomas was later elevated to a Deanery status and currently stands as the headquarters of the Okrika North East Archdeaconry.
