"The Samuel" of St. Philip's
Cornelius Tuboangagbasobia Abibio — dedicated by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Simeon Abibo
The first Choirmaster of St. Philip's was Macaulay E. Williams, succeeded by Messrs Daniel Fiberesima, Inengibosi Magnus, Cornelius Abibo, and Tamuno-Opubo Marcus. Joe Fyneface Amorika later became Choirmaster — trained under the able choirmaster and organist Ebenezer Wellington Gudi at St. Peter's Port Harcourt. Though not resident in the community, Joe always found time to travel to Oba-Ama to teach the choristers, assisted by Israel Wellington Aton as Music Director.
In April 1996, the church engaged Sir Patrick Ase as Choirmaster/Organist. He revived the choir and introduced classical music. Mr. Christian George was appointed Assistant Choirmaster under his tutelage. Sir Patrick Ase — an indigene of Okuru-Ama — has since been a faithful member of the church, travelling from Port Harcourt to Oba-Ama without requesting transport allowance since 2003.
Before St. Philip's was established, there was no school in Oba-Ama. The church established St. Philip's Primary School through the efforts of Mr. Derrick K. Wakama, who served as Agent from 1959–1960. The school started in a half-walled mud building near the present Headmaster's Quarters. All debts were cleared during the pastorate of Mr. S. A. F. Cookey (1961–1964). During the Spiff administration, mission schools were taken over by government, including St. Philip's Primary School.
The St. Philip's Nursery School was established on the initiative of Mr. Asime Fred, supported by Soseipiriala Nengi M. Oba and Rev. E. N. Opuda. Its purpose was to serve as a feeder school to the State Primary School. It later grew and was absorbed into the government primary school.
